Community Building: Five ways to have a work-life balance as a Techie

In a world where almost everyone is working round the clock to make ends meet or attain the next level of their career, techies are not left behind. Looking up close, the advancements over the years in technology leave one wondering if techies have a life outside their work at all. From coding, debugging, meetings, and deadlines that could sometimes blur the line between life and work, there is a need to create a balance between personal and professional life. As a techie intending to strike a balance between work and life, take the following steps:

Acknowledge the problem
The first step in solving every problem is to acknowledge that there is a problem. This is because when you fail to realise that you lack a work-life balance, you are likely going to take things lightly. Some of the signs that you might be showing include withdrawal from friends and family, attention to work more than people, and finding your way to your work screen as fast as you can, even in social gatherings.

Create boundaries
When you realize that you exhibit any of the above signs, you need to start by creating boundaries. Try to have a dedicated workspace and avoid bringing work-related tasks into your personal space. Whether you work remotely or you work onsite in an organisation, you need to be able to draw the line. Learn to say ‘no’ when your plate is full and embrace delegating tasks. Because often time techies have their workspaces, it is easier to get carried away however, setting clear boundaries would help interact with others, control time and energy, and fosters quality relationships.

Prioritise self-care
You need to prioritise self-care. If you are like most techies, you often get caught up with work, hence, you neglect your well-being. It is important to note that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. Allocate time for regular exercise, a healthy diet, and most importantly, sleep. Also, getting engaged in the activities that you enjoy will help you recharge and feel better. Have a hobby outside work too that keeps you mentally and physically fit, contributing to your productivity as a whole.

Take screen breaks
Take breaks away from your screen to spend quality time with your loved ones such as family and friends. Though one of the many rewards of technology is digital connectivity, it is of great importance that you must unplug and take a break from technology from time to time. Creating time to nurture relationships with co-workers, friends, and family is of the utmost importance to have a healthy work-life balance. Having ‘Tech-free’ times to connect and interact with others allows for meaningful connection, the creation of cherished memories, and sometimes an informal ideation process.

Network
Create time for networking. Attending social events is also a great way to establish relationships away from your screen. You could start by attending events that resonate with what you currently do or hope to do. That way you learn more from others and in no time you have a circle of people that you can talk to even when you get stuck with your work.

In conclusion, it is important to note that creating a work-life balance will go a long way in ensuring that you enjoy both ways but it requires commitment and conscious effort. Remember, in the end, it will help you thrive all around.
